Did you just get a note from Sporty's that they are already out with their new Pilot Regulations? Why so soon? I am surprised that Sportys and others are already promoting their 2009 FAR/AIM. They usually at least wait until after October when the government fiscal year rolls over to justify the new year.
If they printed after 1 October, at least the CFR Title 49 on accident reporting would be current. It is updated each October. The fact is that the main section of the FAR (CFR Title 14 on flight regulations) is updated 1 January each year and the AIM is updated with a change about every 6 months. A new AIM Manual was just released this past July and the next update should be in February.
With an October print date, after less than 3 months, most of the FAR in paper books will be obsolete, and after 4 months the AIM is also outdated. Normally, the only section in the whole book that stays current is a short section of the FAR (CFR Title 49), on accident reporting and flight schools. Even that will be old if they publish their 09 version before October.
Their logic is lost on me. Paper copes circulate most of the year with obsolete information. Why not print after the January updates to the FAR, or even better after the next update of the AIM in February? If they printed in February each year, all the book would be current for 6 months and the most relevant sections would be current for 11 months. Personally, I much prefer
electronic services that save trees and come with update services to stay accurate. No matter when they are purchased, they stay current for as long as the service is kept active.
